SBS Modified Shingles

If you are looking for a better roofing alternative, but are not ready to make the jump to Rubber or Metal roofing, SBS Rubber Modified shingles might be the answer you are looking for. SBS Shingles are growing in popularity in Windsor and Essex County. Compared to the traditional fiberglass laminate shingle, they feature superior strength and durability and a better design for a sturdier installation.

SBS shingles on average cost approximately 30% more than a traditional fiberglass laminate shingle, but are expected to last up to 75% longer.  Dayus Roofing has been installing SBS shingles in Windsor Essex since 2000, but the technology has been around since 1986.
SBS Shingles provide a durable barrier against extreme weather, receiving the UL 2218 Class 4 Impact Resistance classification, the highest rating possible. In a Class 4 rating test, the SBS shingles withstood a simulation of hailstones impacting a roof at 90 mph (144 kph) without sustaining damage.
Manufacturing of the SBS shingle technology begins with a durable base layer of fiberglass mat. The unique fiberglass mat is coated on both sides with the SBS modified rubber asphalt which provides tensile strength and increased flexibility, protecting your investment. Additional weight in the shingle provides long term weatherability and granule adhesion; to offer maximum protection.
The rubberizing aspect of SBS increases flexibility and weatherability for your roof. The thermo cycling resilience of SBS modified asphalt provides greater granule adhesion for the shingle, which creates a better barrier from the elements. When granules stay on the shingles, your roof lasts longer.
One of the most critical aspects of a successful roofing project is correct shingle installation. Improper fastener placement is the leading cause of incorrect shingle installation and can subsequently void the warranty. Our SBS shingle is manufactured using the patented ZONE® technology which includes a tapered nailing area over three times larger than other laminate shingles. The ZONE’s® larger nailing area dramatically improves correct fastener placement.

The SBS shingle is manufactured with a double line of defense in the critical area for a laminated shingle, with double SEBS asphalt rain seal protection. The SEBS asphalt has elongation capabilities of up to 800 percent, making it flexible down to zero degrees. The rain seal remains intact through the freeze and thaw cycle. SBS asphalt is superior to oxidized asphalt because of its cohesive and adhesive properties. The adhesive properties of SEBS asphalt join the shingle together while the cohesive properties prevent it from breaking apart from itself.

What’s the Catch?

Even though we expect the SBS shingle to last significantly longer than any standard fiberglass product the warranty coverage is not as extensive as the BIG warranty manufacturers extended warranties. SBS shingles will match any manufacturer’s standard warranty you choose through the Your Choice Warranty Program. However, extended warranties including the GAF Golden Pledge, System Plus and 4 and 5 star warranties from Certainteed are excluded.

It sounds contradictory to say a product with a lesser warranty is sure to outlast the higher coverage, but in this case, it is true. Understanding the difference between actual life expectancy and warranty promises is very important when choosing the right roof for your home.
